Blue-IQ
is ours!
The
look on the car park attendants face said it all.
We did all look very suspicious wearing mostly all black
and bright blue jumping harnesses, I do have to admit.
But when ten jumpers disembark from a bakkie with a
mission in mind, nothing will get in our way -- specifically
not a security guard.
|
But the worry was always at the back of our minds
-- we could get caught doing this and get sent
for a night in the cages. This was because what
we had set out to do was illegal -- the first
unpermitted jump from the Blue IQ towers in Newtown,
Johannesburg. And jump it we did.
As
the sun began to rise over the city, ten black-clad
figures sped down the walls of the tower, silent
and precise -- except for Bush and Duck who decided
that some mid-air acrobatics were called for,
raising Dad to call out blasphemies that would
have made a sailor blush -- completing what the
team had set out to do -- an illegal-to-legal
jump of Blue IQ.

We met at the Market Theatre at 3.30am, all skeptical
and worried about what was going to take place. Once
at the theatre, we harnessed up and got ready to go.
Our arrival was met with a look of utter confusion by
car park attendants, many of whom I am sure have never
seen so much rope in their entire lives.
We
managed to convince them that we were part of a construction
crew, or something like that, and started making our
way to the launch point for our jump. Buddha, after
walking up what he thought was some thousand -odd stairs,
almost gave the whole game away by huffing and puffing
so loud that he made most steam trains sound like stealth
fighters. Duck, Bush, Giggles and Getz kept up their
play fighting antics all the way to the top, giggling
and squealing like women do when they are supposed to
keep quiet. Dad, Problem Child, Jinx, Crash Test and
Pippi-Joller kept their composure all the way to the
top -- true examples of real espionage jumpers.
Once
on top, the jump rigs were put in place and by 4am,
we were ready to go -- but mother nature was not ready
for us: we had to wait for sufficient light so the jump
could be documented on film. So wait we did, for more
than an hour. But once the sun had breached the horizon
and lit Jo'burg sufficiently, we hit the ropes. All
went smoothly, except when Buddha got stuck under the
rails (diet, boy, diet!). Ten jumpers made it from the
tower top to ground zero in under 15 minutes. Less than
20 minutes later -- and after cutting Crash Test loose
from getting stuck while climbing under a fence -- we
were all loaded back into the bakkies, laughing and
cheering at the success of the jump as we headed back
to our meeting point.
Blue-IQ
is ours!
And
the cops never knew....
Be fearless.
