Next
down was Problem Child, who although hasn't been sandboarding
as long as the other two, gave them both a run for their
money -- especially in the swearing department. He too
had a run that involved tumbling rocks, getting stuck
under fallen trees and inspecting boulders up close
and personal after falling face first into them (thank
God for helmets, hey guys?). At the end of the run,
the relief was clear -- he had lived through the quarry.
Last,
but certainly not least, came Crash Test. And he lived
up to his nick, as he tested the crashing ability of
human bodies on practically any hard surface that crossed
his path. His run was also filled with tumbles, grunts
and groans and the eventual two-minute-long barrage
of ridicule for the forces of nature that had inspired
them to do the run in the first place. At the end of
the run he also had some very colourful words to say,
along with some very interesting tales of the various
boulders he encountered on the way down.
But
the fun did not end there -- Dad and Crash Test (Problem
Child opted out of the second run due to rather serious
knee and elbow injuries incurred on the gully run) made
their way back to the top of the quarry again to face
the ultimate challenge -- a sheer face consisting only
of loose rocks and very little else. This was considered
by many at the day to be the dumbest, most insane thing
that PureRush had ever tried to accomplish -- they would
be boarding on an almost sheer rock face and one wrong
move would have resulted in serious injuries, if they
survived.
But survive they did.
After
kissing his puppies, Crash Test assaulted the face with
vigor and contempt and made his way to the bottom in
perfect Crash Test form (like a clown with an electric
eel in his pants). A few moments of terror were shared
with the crowd as he discovered that the "little" drop-offs
were not as little as we had anticipated -- some were
as high as two-and-a-half meters, down onto sheer rock.
On a wing and a prayer, Crash Test overcame these with
minimal skidmarking, and gracefully tumbled the rest
of the route to the bottom.
Dad
took the same gung-ho approach to the challenge, launching
into the most spectacular drop in we have seen in a
while. His landing was a bit less graceful than the
launch, but he recovered well and continued down to
the enormous rock drops that had stopped Crash Test
in his tracks. He too stopped in his tracks. And swore.
And then dropped like a wingless bird into the treacherous
falls. And he survived. He swore some more, and then
continued the rest of the way to the bottom of the run
-- yet another victor of the mountain.
Once
back at the cars, the intrepid boarders compared scars
and laughed at their antics, all the while relishing
in the adrenaline of staring Death in the face and giving
him the finger.
Well
done guys!
